Edge House

Aberporth has always had a special place in my heart. It has been over 10 years since my first meeting with Kay and Kristian on a wet, windy day in West Wales.”

“Their enthusiasm was infectious and convinced my dad and me to take a massive leap of faith to demolish a tired building in need of major work and embark on a brave new build. What was once a restaurant where I had ice cream as a child is now gone, and thanks to their vision, my dream home by the sea is now complete.”

“Hyde and Hyde managed the project completely, from initial sketches, meetings with the local town council, planning approval, building regulations, and finally, the build itself. The house was aligned around its cliff-top location, and we enjoy breathtaking views of the sea from every window.”

“Kay and Kristian's artistic talent is clearly evident not just in the design of our home but also in the landscape, its roof, and garden. It's also apparent in their choice of colours to frame the views, bespoke internal furniture, fixtures and fittings. The purchase and manufacture of which were supervised with real care, flair, imagination, and attention to detail.”

“As I look back on our journey with these special architects, I fill up with tears of joy when I consider what Kay and Kristian and their team has helped us achieve. They can certainly say, 'We Build Emotion.’”

“I contacted Kristian and Kay back in 2011, once I came across their website, I knew at once they were the architects I wanted to design my new home. After a visit to my existing home and numerous discussions, they went away and came up with a design that exceeded my expectations.”

“They handled all the building regulations and planning details and provided a complete set of construction drawings. They also oversaw the building works.”

“As the project has, in effect, been a self-build, it was reassuring to know that they were on hand to help with any queries and called to the site whenever needed.”

“Now that my home is complete, I have received numerous compliments from everyone who has visited. Well done to you both and your team.”

Silver House

"We initially approached Hyde and Hyde for our project as we loved their unique, contemporary designs. Once we met them we knew they were the team we wanted to work with as they totally understood what we wanted and approached the house design around how we lived our lives.”

"We were concerned about planning, particularly as the house is located within a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; but they expertly navigated the process and got us our dream. They added a dimension of design detail that I would never have imagined and ensured that their vision was delivered for us by the teams onsite.”

"Hyde and Hyde challenged us throughout the design process, but as a result, we are delighted with the outcome and absolutely love our new home, which wouldn't have been possible without their amazing work."

Quatrefoil House

“The renovation and extension of Quatrefoil House is a harmonious mixture of progressive architecture and the latest technology and automation, all within the proportions and shapes of a grand Victorian house - originally built by John Dover near Oxford University.”

“The house for us, although a fabulous blend of new and old, is predominantly a comfortable and fun family home. The dichotomy of being all together as a family in the heart of the house and having the luxury of finding sanctuary in a secluded room, is the greatest asset of this transformation. This valuable feature is appreciated by every family member, including the dog!”

“When we first bought the property, we knew that the transformation would require an ambitious vision. We understood this would be rare and difficult to find, but on completion, we’ve realised that our architect possessed this skill in abundance.”

Castle High

“When we first decided on the mad leap of faith that is a demolition and self build we found our architects, Hyde and Hyde, on a random google search of Award Wining Architects. We loved the look of their work and contacted them the next day. Their enthusiasm was infectious from the outset and their eagerness to learn about us and our family seemed more important than what we wanted our house to look like. They were looking for the narrative from the inside out. Once we had met a few times, talked about our family and our day to day lives we further explored our requirements in a new home.”

“We were fans of concrete, both of the aesthetic and as a highly durable, low maintenance material which would protect us in our highly exposed setting. We wanted generous glazing to make the most of the spectacular views afforded by the elevated nature of the site and we wanted an open plan space to accommodate a large and busy family of six.”

“We wanted overall to to replace a rapidly deteriorating, draughty, very damp old farm house and a dilapidated barn with a functioning, comfortable home, as self sufficient as possible and to make the most of an incredibly elevated, exposed site, responding to changing seasons and a growing family. Also if we were to undertake such a monumental task we wanted it to be beautiful and timeless. Hyde and Hyde completely delivered that vision for us. The shape of the house frames every view and at the same time generates the order for the internal layout and joins with barn and outbuilding to create the sanctuary we wanted.”

“We love the way the portal overhang is so beautifully designed but also shades the space and allows for solar gain in winter. The large doors open onto the sheltered internal courtyard and extends our living space outside. The monumental nature of the structure provides a sense of safety and security. Within the steel, concrete and extensive glazing we feel suspended in the landscape, exposed to it and yet completely protected at the same time. The ancient trees, and considered build materials mean that the house sits in its landscape so discreetly it is hardly visible from nearby fields and roads.”

“Kristian, Kay and their talented team were always on hand to provide constructive feedback or answer any queries. They have been so supportive, positive and encouraging throughout our self build and as excited as us to see the realisation of our dream home. From pen to paper to last door hung Castle High has exceeded expectations in both beauty and function.”

“The architectural services provided by Hyde and Hyde took the project from initial concept, through planning approval, building regulations, and construction drawings. The construction was managed on-site by a team led by an experienced Project Manager engaged directly by the homeowner. The building is of modest size, around 180 sqm, over three stories, including a basement for storage and significant mechanical and electrical services.”

“Hyde and Hyde were able to take on board our outline and slightly cutting edge concepts for our home and, in a very sensitive environmental area on the coast, produce a design acceptable to strict planning constraints, which, while unique at the time in the area, has become the accepted architectural style for several new builds since then.”

“It is wonderful to live in a home that complete strangers and neighbors regularly compliment us on. The home has won several prestigious architectural awards and nominations, including the 2015 RIBA National Award, one of 39 UK buildings listed, including those subsequently nominated for the Stirling Prize for Architecture. This publicity has led to several requests to appear on prime-time TV.

“While the wider recognition of our house has been immensely welcome, albeit somewhat humbling in the context of other buildings with which we have been associated, this is to some extent insignificant compared with how the house works as a home. Now in our fifth year living here, it is very clear that Hyde and Hyde has designed a home that goes well beyond our original expectations, creating an extremely efficient space that completely meets the requirements of our day-to-day lifestyle.”
