Falsterbo House

Falsterbo House is a project under a big sky, nested on the Northumberland coast and overlooking the North Sea. It is a deep retrofit and careful extension of an existing mid century home.

The project began with a simple ambition from a young family seeking a slower life, and off grid security, without losing the elegant mid century proportion that gives this home its grace. We knew we had to guard the flame of the original home. Its clarity was worth protecting while the performance needed to be transformed. Technically, the retrofit resolves cold bridges, conceals photovoltaic arrays, and lifts the energy rating from a struggling baseline to a robust A level performance. The light and weather here change by the minute. A suspended glass façade was therefore designed to register the shifting sky while concealing the deeper work of insulation, airtightness and durability.

The result is a home that holds its calm silhouette while reflecting the coastal atmosphere, with an ever changing reflective façade that will never appear the same twice, blue at dawn, red at dusk and everything in between.

“Hyde + Hyde expertly guided us through the whole design process from concept to detailed design, and along the way really opened our eyes to detail, scale and material beauty.”
