2025 Homes & Gardens Design Awards Winner

We’re delighted to share that Edge House has been awarded Best Sustainability Project in the 2025 Homes & Gardens Design Awards.

Perched along the coastal edge of Cardiganshire, this is a home designed to endure. A robust concrete base shields against wind and weather, anchoring the building into the landscape. Above, a lightweight glulam structure reduces embodied energy while sequestering carbon. It creates a balance of weight and lightness, shelter and openness.

Edge House is a multigenerational home, where three generations live together under one roof. It holds the memories of the past while offering space to grow, rest and reconnect. A place defined not by size, but by belonging. Shaped by time, held by landscape.

Sustainability sits at the heart of the project. The timber framing and glulam roof structure reduce the embodied energy of the building, providing a low carbon alternative to steel and concrete. Timber is the only building material that grows. When carefully sourced, it locks in carbon, offers warmth, and carries an elemental beauty that makes it both pragmatic and poetic. For us, choosing wood is not a trend but a responsibility. It allows us to lessen the footprint of our work while creating homes of longevity and character.

Thank you to Homes & Gardens for recognising the project’s environmental ambition as well as its expression of designed longevity. Carefully anchored within an exposed cliff edge setting, this home is built to outlast centuries of coastal erosion.

We see Edge House as part of a much larger journey. Timber construction is changing the way we think about buildings, and we are actively exploring its potential across other projects in the UK. Through design, construction, and post-occupancy research, we are committed to deepening our understanding of this remarkable material and its role in addressing the climate crisis. In the meantime, if you would like to learn more or speak directly with our studio, we would be delighted to hear from you.
