Retrofitting Mid-Century Modernism – Alnmouth

This is the story of a small family seeking a slower, quieter life; off-grid, surrounded by solitude, and immersed in the vast, elemental landscape of Northumberland.

Hyde + Hyde Architects has been appointed to sensitively retrofit and extend an existing 1960s mid-century modern house near Alnwick. This is a remote coastal town in one of the most secluded parts of the UK. The home sits along the rugged edge of the North Sea, in a region known for its wild beauty, Norse heritage, and desolate beaches.

Our architectural strategy focuses on drastically reducing the home’s energy dependence while upgrading the existing building fabric. The design honours the original proportions and clarity of the structure, bringing new life to an elegant but timeworn modernist dwelling.

The house, known as Falsterbo House, draws its name from its historical and geographical resonance with Falsterbo, Sweden. Located on the exact same latitude across the North Sea (55.39392° N, 12.83506° E). This invisible line, stretching between two coasts, becomes a poetic anchor for a home that connects history, place, and meaning.
