Performance over Presence
- Tim Ferris

As architects, we visit our projects on-site, attend seminars and talks, teach in schools of architecture, lecture and visit our clients throughout the UK. Looking back, architects have always existed in a certain culture of remote working. Yet we didn’t fully appreciate the difference between the previous normal and this new way of 'home working', brought about by the recent pandemic.

Working from home has revealed some obvious and not so obvious advantages. The big one - The quality of life that comes from less time commuting is truly notable. We are also more productive as a team. The following great article from Inc. puts forward some strong reasons why this might be the case. Cutting out the commute to the studio can be a huge morale boost.

It seems for now and the near future - work-life balance is easier to achieve. Walking into the garden lunch time, among flowers and plants or heading to a local park, beach or forest can enrich the soul in ways we do not fully understand - knowing simultaneously you are no more than a few minutes from home.

We think working from home should be a choice, it is for our team.

Below is a list of some things that work for us, we hope it helps inspire.

  1. Dedicate mornings to high-value tasks.

  2. Separate your working space from your living space.

  3. Start work early, as early as you can.

  4. Don’t underestimate the power of noise-cancelling technology.

  5. Check-in with friends family and your team more often than you think you need to.

  6. Think it do it and pick up the phone.

  7. Make a morning routine, you hear it everywhere - well it works.

  8. Get out and walk lunchtime if you can, find local walks on apps like AllTrails, return charged.
