Sakura Cray-Pas.

As Japanese stationery inventions go, the Sakura Cray-Pas is right up there with the best. A crayon-pastel hybrid invented by a pair of teachers in 1925, the cray-pas sets children (and adults) free from brittle pencils and fussy watercolours. Even today, a box of cray-pas is in every child’s school bag and they are still made by Sakura, the company that invented them a century ago. The classic orange box, complete with an elastic-attached lid, was recognised with a Good Design Long Life Design Award last year.

The premiere issue of the Monocle Design Directory is out now.
