Braun x Porsche.

“What if Braun had sponsored a Porsche team circa 1970, and what if Dieter Rams and his team had been involved in the car’s design?” That’s the idea posed by director Gary Hustwit. The result is what you see above: built in collaboration with New Jersey-based Porsche mavens ROCS, this is their fastidious take on answering that question. Appearing as though it emerged from a shed only days ago, and with the scars to match, this build leaves no surface untouched, and crucially, no detail unconsidered. “Imagine if the car was raced hard on the German touring circuit for a few years and then stored in Kronberg, where Rams lives and Braun is based, for 50 years?” Gary continues; ”What would that car look like?”

Flourishes and references to Braun design abound including the steel deck lid and front grilles which are completely unique - a reference to Rams’ iconic Braun L 1 speaker from 1957. Not a single surface or idea exists here without careful consideration, down to the individual screws which hold in the 911R-style tail lights.

”This car is fast, light, loud, and dirty, and it evokes the spirit of German privateer racers in the early ‘70s, and functionalist industrial design. Dieter Rams is a lifelong Porsche driver, and the Kronberg 911 is sort of a tribute to him on his 90th birthday.”

An impeccable reissue of a classic, designed by Naoto Fukasawa for Japanese brand, PLUS. A minimalist portable office set, in a case, given an award-winning modern makeover. Inside the magnetically closed case you will find scissors, a ruler, tape dispenser, knife, tape measure, glue, stapler, and Sim card pin. Available in grey, white, pink or navy.

Iwano Ichibei IX.

Ichibei Iwano IX is a Living National Treasure in Japan, prized for his Washi making skills. Iwano makes Washi by hand, without the aid of machinery, using 100% Japanese Kozo (mulberry). A ninth generation papermaker of the historic Echizen family, his heavyweight sheets are one of the purest expressions of Japanese papers.

He is currently the only individual in the craft who holds the distinction of cultural heritage status. His father played a central role in surviving the craft when pressure to transition to industrial pulp was more than immense, and paved the way for quality woodblock printing papers. The uncompromising work continues to this day in exactly the same setting. The simplicity of the process is met by the highest quality materials, pristine natural water and all-consuming attention to detail.

This strong, thin paper is used not only for books, drawings, and paintings, but also as a material for architecture and everyday items including sliding paper screens and partitions (shoji and fusuma), umbrellas, and garments.

A Rewilding Britain Landscape.

This years Chelsea Best in Show is a garden which shows a rewilding beaver habitat in the south west of England. Designed by Adam Hunt & Lulu Urquhart, the garden features a brook which flows beneath a west-country crafted dry-stone wall, under a woodland edge of hawthorn, elder, viburnum, hazel and field maple. Beavers have entered the landscape and built a lodge and a dam which has altered the water course and created the first large pool in the garden. In support of Rewilding Britain, this garden exemplifies the harmonious coexistence of people and the natural world that the concept of rewilding advances.
