Love Letter to the Barbican.

When The Modern House first meets the spoken word artist, Rhael ‘LionHeart’ Cape he is fresh from a residency at the Fallingwater Institute and fizzing with new ideas. It has been 10 years since the 37-year-old gave up his day job to pursue life as a poet. He is now an honorary fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects, and he hasn’t looked back. Apart from when asked to – which brings us here, to the Barbican, where his work with words began.

The Volman Villa.

Josef Volman, a factory owner and patron, first envisioned this impressive villa in a large park above the romantic landscape of the Elbe River in Čelákovice, 20 km east of Prague in the Czech Republic. One of the most beautiful and expensive residences of the interwar period, it was designed for him in 1938-1939 by the young avant-garde architects Karel Janů and Jiří Štursa. The Volman Villa is a unique edifice of interwar modernism and a deliberate homage to Le Corbusier. It represents the culmination of the ideas of modern architecture and is all the more valuable because it represents a synthesis of various currents of European modernism. It shows how its creators knew the current European trends very well and managed to process them into an exceptional building. Its unique artistic concept and the use of distinctive colours place the villa in the stream of sensual functionalism.

Pentax 17.

The popularity of film cameras has grown rapidly in recent years — especially among young photographers who have experienced this type of camera for the first time ever — because of the distinctive, somewhat nostalgic ambience that is so much different from that of digital cameras. The Pentax 17 was developed using a vast amount of knowhow and technology which RICOH IMAGING/PENTAX had accumulated over the years, with experts and younger engineers working closely together. The camera was designed to allow photographers to express their originality and creativity by leaving some room for manual operation, rather than making it a fully automatic camera.

Monocle’s new Paris café, kiosk and shop is in Montorgueil, Paris, a lively neighbourhood with a village-like atmosphere in the 2nd arrondissement, close to the city’s historic market distric. Stop by for a coffee and a croissant, accompanied by the morning papers, or linger long into the evening over a nightcap. Monocle doesn’t just write about great cafés and retail spaces – they invest in their own. Houssam Kanaan, Meghedi Simonian and Rudy Bou Chebel are the co-founders of Kann Design, the Paris-based interiors firm that brought Monocle to life in the French capital.
