Crafting up North.

In our search for a uniquely crafted facade for our Quatrefoil project in Oxford, we worked with Middlesbrough’s oldest surviving foundry, William Lane.

Seeking out a committed team to make epic buildings for our clients is an essential part of the process of making. The pleasure of collaborating with knowledgeable craftspeople adds an extra dimension of understanding and insight into the work.

Here we share a storybook of moments that captures the paradox of danger and beauty in the workshop. It's a white-hot glimpse into an ancient process of making.

The Imaginary Town of an Unconscious Architect.

Created in the 1950s and 1960s, the 387 recycled cardboard models in this collection by Peter Fritz describes a vivid sample of regional Austrian architecture where both the everyday and the vernacular find their dignity. Fritz’s aim looks encyclopaedic, a will to replicate every typology he could have imagined: the bank, the gas station, the farm-house, as well as family houses and fire stations are only some of the actors in the recreation of a sort of imaginary, yet very plausible, town. The models were not made out of existing architectures but rather were inventions of the author who probably recombined details of buildings he must have crossed in his hometown.

Looks Like You Need To Let It Out.

You’ve been through a lot this year and it looks like you need the perfect place to let your frustrations out. Somewhere big, vast and untouched. It looks like you need Iceland. Record your scream and release it into Iceland’s beautiful, wide-open spaces. You’ll feel better.

Do Make.

We are all makers. From brewing our morning coffee to folding a paper aeroplane, we find it satisfying to create something that didn’t exist before. And it isn’t just about the outcome. Making requires us to slow down and become absorbed in the process: an antidote to our fast-paced world.

James Otter is an award-winning wooden surfboard maker with a passion for craftsmanship — and the ocean. In Do Make, he invites us to rediscover the joy of making. By using our hands to transform natural materials into objects of beauty and utility, we reconnect with our creativity, our environment, and back to ourselves.

Upon Reflection.

In December 2014, interface designer, filmmaker, and periodic musician Alex Cornell travelled to Antartica and captured a series of rare shots featuring the seldom-seen underside of an iceberg which quickly went viral. However, this film was the reason he had his camera with him. But something isn’t quite right here. Upon Reflection uses a variety of film and duration techniques to achieve a mesmerizing optical effect—Antarctica like you’ve never seen it.
