The Artist Support Pledge.

Matthew Burrows wanted to help other artists ‘put food on the table’ during lockdown so he came up with a simple idea: you post work on Instagram for no more than £200 and when you reach £1,000 of sales you have to buy another artist’s work. And with that, a new culture and economy was born - one built on trust and generosity. Initially meant to last for just three months, The Artist Support Pledge has proven so successful that Burrows announced he is launching it as a not-for profit company with support from the Crafts Council.

Every Stitch Tells a Story.

Sam Gleeson’s 2008 Sastruga jacket has become a part of who he is. Finisterre have been repairing it since 2015. They offered Sam a new jacket so they could take his little red coat and frame it, as a benchmark of what they think ‘Lived and Loved’ can be. But Sam wasn’t ready to let it go just yet. So Finisterre got Sam to share the jacket’s history and recount some of the adventures they’ve shared.

Mid-21st Century Modern: That Jetsons Architecture

Found via the brilliant Twitter feed of Present & Correct, Smithsonian Magazine have published an article focussing upon the architecture in The Jetsons universe, which clearly takes cues from architects who worked in the mid-century modern style, like John Lautner and Oscar Niemeyer. A favourite of many is Mr. Spacely’s ‘old fishing cabin’, due mainly to the buildings resemblance to Vandamm‘s hideout in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1959 film North By Northwest.

A Dictionary of Colour Combinations Vol 2.

A combination of two publications from 1935 & 1937, both compiled by artist Sanzo Wada. It takes inspiration from the seasons, and takes palettes from Japanese design heritage (kimonos, paintings, fabric). This incredibly useful, reissued book features over 200 colour combinations. An ideal tool for designers, artists or even if you are decorating your house.

Instructions for Making Dreams.

We’ve been busy in our studio during lockdown, producing technical drawings and designing new work. Part of this output has seen the completion of our construction drawings, schedules and specifications for our new home in Wiltshire - Utsuroi House. A house inspired by Japanese principles of space making, referencing the split lifestyle of our clients, who live in the UK and Japan.
