Our thoughts are with the people of Ukraine who have been displaced from their homes and businesses due to the conflict in their country.

Enter Through The Balcony.

Enter Through The Balcony is a short documentary about makeshift balconies in Ukraine. The lack of government regulation allows Ukrainians to build any balcony regardless of the style of the building, to the point that people sometimes rebuild them to be bigger than the original balcony itself.

The film explores the balcony as an informal architectural form that is uniquely Ukrainian. It is a journey through the decades, examining both balconies and their owners in cities across Ukraine. Through these stories the film uncovers Ukraine’s post-Soviet history — people’s lives, the culture, and the relationship between personal and public space in cities. Supported by the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation.

BEVEL + Molotov.

Kyiv-based design practice +kouple (formerly FILD) have released the BEVEL + Molotov lamp, dedicated to Ukrainian bravery and resistance. All money from this campaign would be transferred to the Ukrainian Army. There is no exact delivery time that they can promise, but it will be delivered soon.

Kharkiv School of Architecture.

The Kharkiv School of Architecture is a private university whose ambition is to become the best school of architecture in Eastern Europe; to start a new tradition in Ukrainian architecture; and to train a new generation of architects and urbanists with profound professional knowledge and up-to-date skills who are able to think critically and to take responsibility for their work. It is located in the northeastern city of Kharkiv, home to 1.4 million residents during peaceful times.

“Now we think first of all about the safety of our students and staff. Whenever possible, students and teachers are evacuated from the city to safer places, if any! However, those who remained in the city have been in bomb shelters almost all the time since yesterday due to constant strikes. How Designers Are Rallying in Ukraine.

Just as graphic artists created posters during the Second World War, Ukrainian designers and creatives are fighting Russian misinformation and conveying their messages to the West. Many of them are doing this while sitting in shelters and basements. Over on Design Week, Kyiv-based designer Katerina Korolevtseva discusses her experience and shares how designers are using their skills to show the world what is happening.

The Eames Molded Plywood Lounge Chair LCM.

In the early 1940s, Ray and Charles Eames experimented with wood-molding techniques that would eventually revolutionize furniture design and production. They applied this technology to create the Eames Molded Plywood Chair.

Shot and edited by our good friend Antonio Carusone, this short film features the Lounge Chair (LCM) version of the design and includes some audio of Charles from a 1956 NBC broadcast of the Arlene Francis show.

Rain Light.

Capturing the dynamic motion of water falling through space, Rain Light is a bespoke 12 metre light installation, comprising over four hundred shimmering fibre optic strands, each at a carefully randomised length to minimise subjective design influence. These strands terminate with a Persian blue glass teardrop, blown and hand crafted in a workshop in rural west Wales. Designed by Kristian Hyde.
