The Stuff That Surrounds.

This third instalment of the Wallpaper* video series The Stuff That Surrounds invites us inside an architectural gem: the brutalist home of Belgian architect Glenn Sestig - one of the most distinctive voices in the field today. Designed by Ivan Van Mossevelde for two art collectors and completed in 1972, the house came into Sestig's hands in 2017, and went through a sensitive restoration, to update and strengthen the original architecture of Van Mossevelde. Enter the front door and you'll find a unique array of art and design collectibles reflective of Sestig's distinctive eye.

Surround Sound.

In collaboration with Aesop, The Modern House are exploring what home and hosting means to different people. Here they speak to architect Benni Allan, founder of practice, EBBA. As someone who is constantly evaluating how we live and how that can be refined and improved, it’s no surprise that his own home is a space to experiment and pursue innovative ideas to their fullest. His Hackney apartment is enveloped in warm, textural Douglas fir, encompassing walls, floors, furniture and even the music speakers for his vinyl collection. This immersive environment provides a much-needed sanctuary away from the demands of his professional life. He opts to share his space with just a few close friends, with time together focussed around enjoying food and music together.

Planning Granted for Black Swan House.

Black Swan House has secured planning approval in Ayrshire, Scotland, with the decision issued at speed, and well within the expected eight week notice period. Set within a remote landscape of wildness, the project is conceived as a graceful landing at the lake’s edge. Our client is delighted, as the project aligns closely with their own values, and way of living, read on to find out how this was achieved.

Over Christmas, when the pace slows, the house has a way of revealing itself. Nothing has failed, but something no longer fits the life being lived inside it.
