stonehenge institute
wiltshire 2002
A competition to provide a visitor centre for Stonehenge. Our primary concern was the protection and conservation of the monuments and the surrounding landscape.
The collection of small buildings; a theatre, a library and archaeological institute would be placed just beyond a ridge out of sight from Stonehenge. The historical avenue, a path leading to the stones would be the point of entry to the site. This pilgramatic approach to the stones would be a painful reminder of the weight of stone; following in the footsteps of ancestors.
Then from a festive calmness the temple would appear like scattered pebbles on the horizon, and with every footstep grow near.
Architecture is then involved, returned to the simple.
