'controlling atmosphere + light'

uplands 2009

The existing property is a four storey town house overlooking Swansea bay. We were asked to refurbish the subterranean level and reconnect this space to the main house.

After careful reconfiguration the existing ground floor south wall was removed to reveal panoramic views to the bay and Devon in the distance. This dramatically altered the perception of internal space and the connection to the outside.

The function of the main south facing room adapts and changes according to the specific furniture used. Atmosphere and colour is controlled by the amount of light allowed to enter through the dynamic screen.

The clients brief was driven by the relationship between the existing house and the focus of the new space; drawing parallels with the poet Rilke, when he proclaimed, 'balance is the equalising of space'.
