Idle Rocks is an existing quintessential 1960's modern house perched high on a hill with panoramic views of the ocean and Langland Bay. Located within a conservation area the existing house had been neglected for many years. Its new owners had approached us to revitalize and breathe life into the existing structure.
A reconfiguration of the internal plan asserts an atmosphere filled with light and space whilst simultaneously allowing for generous areas of privacy and seclusion. Due to the conscious presence of the ocean we extended the existing roof to form an impressive cantilever, providing a rigorous proportion and rhythm to the front elevation and creating a dynamic relationship to the distant horizon.
The newly formed roof allows for a series of spatial transitions. From an enclosed open plan interior to a semi open rain canopy terminating in a dramatic sky frame. This captures the dramatic and ever changing weather patterns overhead.
