'A lantern in the city'

cleopatra's kiosk

embankment london 2004

This competition entry required a new Kiosk to replace the existing present on the bank of the river Thames. The design attempts to redefine a sense of place and forms an icon for the area, 'a lantern in the city'.

To maintain the poetic ethos of a lantern in the city, the simple concept essentially comprises of a glass box supported by a light structural steel frame, cantilevering and penetrating into the urban path of the embankment walkway. It is supported on a concrete plinth concealed under the structure. In an unsympathetic urban environment it provides a holistic, functional and technical solution.
