As part of its annual research study tour Hyde + Hyde architects travelled to Berlin to visit series of seminal works by architects such as Walter Gropius, Mies van der Rohe, Peter Behrens, Bruno and Max Taut, Erich Mendelsson, Hans Scharoun and Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Various urban developments and sensitive sites such as the ‘topography of terror’ was also visited.

Our focus: The tectonic…in the German enlightenment, 1750-187. Where architecture was celebrated as a constructional craft. We opted for sustainable travel with Fatt Bike Tours, Berlin; cycling around the city and parks allowed chance encounters with contemporary works such as the The Gallery AM Kupfergaben 10 by David Chipperfield.

Insight was gained into the urban strategies, architectural solutions and technological innovations under way. We visited projects in development around the inner city and in Berlin’s intensely historical centre.
